Don't mean to mislead. I have no specific knowledge of any commitment in the chamber. But I've been a recruiting junkie for a long time, and I have that itch. Part of it is the 2011 prediction. Part is all the new names starting to bubble up. Part of it is how close the early period is now. I FULLY expect this forum to be an exciting and excited place very soon.

If someone new had posted this, they would be getting bagged on. Not saying I agree with that, but that is what would have gone down.

The saying originally comes from the olden days of flintlock rifles, when wet powder meant you were defenseless. "Keep your powder dry" would be more or less equivalent to saying "take care of yourself" or "be careful" to a friend as you were parting company.

You're welcome for the history lesson.

RE: Ready for some big news... me too
Sin and salvation walk hand in hand
Right past the jury to the promised land
And I've been in prison baby most of my days
Must be these reckless ways

God and creation roll side by side
They wave to the jury and the gates open wide
And I've been hard and ancient like dinosaur bones
Hiding under these stones

Restless days
Feel like I'm falling away
Restless nights
When you're holding me tight
Restless world
I thank God for my girl
Restless days

My salvation runs hot and cold
I plead to the jury I know I borrowed I know I stole
And I've been trying your honor in so many ways
Must be these restless
I guess it's these restless
I know it's these restless days
Restless days

Tigerspin is definitely correct. With respect to everyone, too many folks are ready to jump posters with low counts (yes, I'm a low 'count poster, myself)!

Tigerderek,
Man, I remember when Lakeland was a real vacation for my dirt poor east Memphis family (we went twice!). All woods out there. Times change. Of course, I used to fish in Nonconnah Creek where Sam's is now.

CTG,

Back then (60's), it wasn't so bad. I caught catfish and some small bream. Camped across 240 from Sam's. Just woods then. I went to South Park Elementary School there!!

Past reliability and accuracy of a poster is one of the few criteria that maybe applied to the worthiness of a speculative post. It takes time to build credibility and hence the tendency to view newcomers bearing new information with skepticism.

Don't know if it's the same place but in the sixties Lakeland was an amusement park out I40 where I was Rancid Butterball. He was an old moonshiner who'd hold up the train and rob the kid's at gunpoint of their nickels and dimes. It supplemented that .60 an hour.

I remember riding the (real) train from Memphis to Collierville on a school trip in 1953, and thinking that was a big deal.

I also remember going to Lakeland Park on numerous occasions. If there was a train ride there, I don't recall it, but maybe I was too big to ride it by then. My sister lives there now with a view out her window across the lake to where all the rides used to be.

In college (before I transferred to Memphis State), one of my suite mates and fraternity brothers was Louis Garner, Jr. son of the guy who owned Lakeland.

All good times.

Huddlha,

You (Rancid Butterball) owe me ten cents! And please consider inflation and interest for these past 40 years, so we're probably talking $10,000! Man, that takes me back.

Ha. It could've been a quarter. Course maybe you weren't skeert enough. Stick em up kids or I'll blow a hole in ya! Then firing that shotgun in the air to get em reachin way down. Everybody shivrin and shakin. Life was good.

Seems I remember riding over the lake out there on a ski lift type contraption. But, that was many, many beers ago.

Then you rode right over "Ole Smokey", an incredibly cool train btw. It passed underneath the Brussel's World Fair Skyride out in the woods near the far tower. The lake had a pirate ship tooling around in it.

I wasn't allowed to go to Lakeland as a kid. My mom thought i would get hooked on drugs out there.

Yep, I remember the Sky Ride, but not the train. Probably was too big to ride the train by the time I started going out there.

You can take a nice little hike and see the remains of the train tracks and sky ride. I take my dogs hiking through there. It's at the dead end of the street that the new shelby county fire dept. is located on. There is a path next to the tennis courts which leads in to the woods. The woods end where the sky ride would begin and then go across the lake. I can't think of the name of the street, but it's runs off Canada Road near Huff and Puff. The hike will bring back many memories. The tracks are on the right side of the path.
